The Beta Iota chapter of Phi Lambda Upsilon, the chemistry honorary fraternity, welcomes into membership junior and senior undergraduates and second-year graduate students who have distinguished themselves academically. Membership in the fraternity, offered to majors in the Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering, requires a GPA of 3.40 or higher. Invitations to membership are made during the Fall Semester. In order to raise money to support the chapter, the members of Phi Lambda Upsilon sell laboratory safety glasses at the beginning of each semester. Part of proceeds from these sales is used to defray the expenses of members who have the opportunity to present their undergraduate or graduate research results at a regional or national meeting. In addition, the chapter sponsors the "Outstanding Senior" awards given at the close of each academic year as well as the award to the outstanding student in the organic chemistry course sequence. Prof. Adams currently serves as Councilor (Chapter Advisor) of this group.
